Jesus’ Call
This Sunday, our Gospel is taken from Matthew 4:12–23. In this Gospel, we see the dawn of Jesus’ public ministry. After John the Baptist’s arrest, Jesus goes to Galilee, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy: “The people who sat in darkness have seen a Great Light.” This light is not just a symbol, it is Jesus Christ Himself, entering the world’s shadows to bring hope, healing, and renewal. His choice of Galilee, a place often overlooked, reveals God’s heart for the humble and the forgotten.
Jesus begins with a clear and urgent message: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven has come near.” Repentance here is a turning of the whole self toward God — a change in direction that opens us to His grace. It is an invitation to step out of darkness and walk in His Light.
When Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John, their response was immediate. They left their nets, their work, and their familiar lives to follow Him. Their example challenges us to consider what “nets” (fears, attachments, or distractions) we might need to release in order to answer His call fully.
Being a disciple of Jesus is not passive. Just as the first disciples became “fishers of people,” we too are called to share Jesus Christ’s light with others, that is to be instruments of hope, peace, and truth in a world that often feels shadowed.
Therefore, this week, let us reflect on where we need Jesus Christ’s Light most; what we must leave behind to follow Him more closely. How can we be bearers of that Light to those around us? The same Jesus who walked along the Sea of Galilee still calls us today and the question is: Will we follow Him? Why and how?
