Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday

This Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church, but it is far more than a historical anniversary. It is a living, breathing reminder that God’s Spirit is still at work — stirring hearts, breaking down barriers and calling us into a life of bold witness. On that first Pentecost, the disciples were gathered in an upper room, weighed down by fear and uncertainty. They had seen the risen Christ, yet the future felt fragile and unclear. Then, suddenly, the sound of a rushing wind filled the space, tongues of fire rested upon them and they were transformed. What had been a closed, silent room became a place of proclamation, joy and courage.
The miracle of Pentecost was not only in the speaking of many languages, but in the breaking open of hearts. The Spirit empowered ordinary people to carry an extraordinary message — that God’s love is for all, without exception. The same Spirit that moved through Jerusalem that day still moves through our world now, often quietly: in the courage to speak the truth, in the strength to forgive, in the compassion to reach across divides.
In our own time, we too may find ourselves in “locked rooms” — moments of hesitation, doubt, or weariness. We may feel unsure of how to move forward in our faith, our relationships, or our calling. Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit does not wait for us to be ready or perfect. The Spirit comes into our weakness, our uncertainty, and our fear, breathing life where we thought there was only stillness.
May we leave this Pentecost Sunday not only recalling an ancient event, but embodying it — carrying the warmth of God’s love into a world that longs for light, speaking words of hope in a language that hearts can understand, and trusting that the Spirit who began a good work in us will see it through to completion.
Let us now ask ourselves: where is the Spirit nudging us to speak up for justice, to extend kindness, to reconcile with someone, or to begin again? Where might God be asking us to step out of the safety of the upper room and into the wide, unpredictable world?

Your gift to ShareLife invests in the future of our Church

Your support of ShareLife helps form future priests—men who will listen, accompany and offer Christ to the world. Rev. James Cyfko spent a decade in formation at St. Augustine’s Seminary, preparing to lay down his life for the people of God. “I deeply appreciate the ongoing charity of ShareLife,” says Rev. James Cyfko. “I am eager to give back to the community which has helped me to focus on faithfully following my vocational calling.” Your devotion lifts the burden of financial worry, enabling men to embrace God’s call fully in preparation for a life of service.
Next Sunday, May 31st, is the third ShareLife Sunday. Please give at the parish using a ShareLife envelope, or at sharelife.org/donate.
