Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Discipleship

DiscipleshipThis Sunday’s liturgy draws us into the heart of discipleship — a call that is both tender and demanding. The readings remind us that following Jesus is not simply about believing in Him, but about allowing Him to shape our choices, relationships and priorities so that God’s will becomes the compass of our lives.
In the First Reading (2 Kings 4:8–11, 14–16a), we encounter a woman who welcomes the prophet Elisha with quiet generosity. She offers what she has without seeking recognition and in doing so, she becomes a channel of God’s blessing. Her example shows that hospitality, when rooted in love, is never wasted — it becomes a sacred meeting place between God and His people.
Meanwhile, the Gospel (Matthew 10:37–42) speaks with striking clarity: to love Jesus above all is the foundation of true discipleship. This is not a rejection of family or friends, but an invitation to love them more authentically by loving God first. Jesus also assures us that even the smallest act of kindness — like offering a cup of water to someone in need — carries eternal weight when done in His name.
So, the message is clear and life-giving: God treasures every act of love, no matter how hidden or humble. Discipleship requires trust, letting go of self-reliance and allowing God to provide through His grace and through others.
As we step into the week ahead, may we keep our hearts open: ready to serve, ready to receive, and ready to let God’s love be the measure of all we do.
