Corpus Christi Sunday

Corpus Christi

This Sunday, the Church celebrates the feast of Corpus Christi—the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. The Body and Blood of Christ, also known as the Eucharist, is the greatest and deepest mystery of the Church. At the same time, it is also one of the most difficult to fully comprehend, understand, and believe. This is because it is the mystery of God’s love for us—something far beyond our human understanding.

What happened at the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish, which we hear in this Sunday’s Gospel, happens at every Mass. The bread and wine are blessed and consecrated, and they become the Body and Blood of Christ. Yes, this happens at every Mass. And as the saying goes, a situation will keep repeating itself until we learn the lesson from it.

For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. But for those who do not believe, no explanation is possible.

In just five days, on Friday, the Church will celebrate the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The feast of Corpus Christi prepares us for this encounter with the Heart of Christ. Because the Body of Christ we receive in Holy Communion is nothing less than the Sacred Heart of Jesus—the most profound blessing of God.

That is why, in receiving the Body of Christ, which is the Heart of Christ, we must make an act of faith—we must say “Amen.” In doing so, we are also asking Jesus to make our hearts like His, so that our love may be multiplied to feed the hunger of the world. That is the lesson we are called to learn again and again at every Eucharist.

Our reflection is: What does the Eucharist—or Corpus Christi—mean for our daily lives?

How can we allow our love to be multiplied to feed the hunger of our family members, our community, and the people we meet each day?
