Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Salt and Light

This Sunday’s readings are a radiant call to live as people who carry the light of Jesus Christ into every corner of the world. In Isaiah 58:6–10, God reminds us that true worship is not found in empty gestures, but in love that takes action: feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, and standing beside those who are forgotten. When we live this way, Isaiah promises, “your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly.” What a beautiful image — our lives becoming like the sunrise, breaking through the darkness with warmth and hope.
In the Gospel (Matthew 5:13–16), Jesus speaks directly to our identity: You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. Salt preserves what is good and draws out flavour — just as our presence should preserve goodness and awaken joy in others. Light cannot be hidden; even the smallest flame can pierce the deepest night. Jesus calls us to let our light shine, not to draw attention to ourselves, but that others may see our good works and give glory to God.
This is a mission of courage and love. The world can sometimes feel heavy with shadows — fear, division, and despair — but Jesus Christ’s light within us is stronger than any darkness. We are not asked to be blinding spotlights, but steady, faithful lamps. Our light may shine through bold acts of justice, or it may glow quietly through patience, forgiveness, and everyday kindness. Both are powerful. Both are holy. Remember, we may never see the full reach of our light, but God does. And in His hands, even the smallest act of love can ripple outward to change lives.
Therefore, this week, let us ask ourselves: am I living in a way that makes God’s love visible? Do my words and actions bring hope and healing? Am I willing to shine even when it feels unnoticed?
