First Sunday of Advent

Stay Awake

Manger with baby and angel in barn. Concept of Christmas story

How often in these next few weeks will we hear the question “Are you ready for Christmas?” Gifts, baking, parties…so little time, so much to do. In today’s readings, we hear the same question but in a much broader, more profound context. Simply put, are we ready, not just for Christmas Day, but for the coming of Christ into our lives?
As Christians, we are a people who live in hope, knowing that, while this life isn’t going to last forever, there is something even more wonderful awaiting us. This doesn’t mean that we are to live our lives detached from this world. Today’s Gospel speaks of people eating and drinking, grinding meal, working the fields. Ordinary people living ordinary lives. And it is precisely into this very ordinariness that Jesus comes.
When Jesus tells us to stay awake, He’s not just pointing to the end of time. He’s also inviting us to live in the present moment, to be attentive to the many ordinary ways He enters our daily lives. Perhaps it’s the newly arrived immigrant fearing her welcome in an unknown land. Maybe it’s the recently widowed neighbour dreading his first Christmas alone. As we prepare to celebrate the wonder of God coming to us as a baby, we open ourselves anew to the many opportunities to welcome Him in our midst each day.

Angel Tree
Wrapped gifts under Christmas tree

Everyone is invited to take an “angel” from the St. Vincent de Paul Society Angel Tree. The age and sex of the child is indicated on each “angel” on the tree. Please purchase an age-appropriate gift for $25.00, wrap it and securely attach the “angel” to the gift. Please return the gift by Sunday, December 14th so that your “angel” will not be disappointed.
