Second Sunday of Lent

The Transfiguration

The TransfigurationThe Gospel for this Sunday (Matthew 17:1–9) draws us into one of the most breathtaking moments in Scripture—the Transfiguration of Jesus. Peter, James, and John follow Him up a high mountain, perhaps weary from the climb, unaware of what awaits them. Suddenly, the ordinary is shattered by the extraordinary: Jesus’ face shines like the sun, His garments radiate pure light, and the voice of the Father resounds from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son… listen to Him.”
This is not just a vision of glory—it is a gift of hope. The disciples were walking toward Jerusalem, toward the shadow of the cross. God, in His mercy, allowed them to see the end of the story before the hardest chapter began. The Transfiguration is a reminder that beyond every trial and cross, there is resurrection.
Lent is our own climb up the mountain. It is not always easy: prayer can feel dry, fasting can test us, and acts of charity can stretch our comfort. But on this climb, God invites us to see life from His perspective. He reminds us that His light is stronger than any darkness, His promises are more certain than any fear.
Therefore, Transfiguration leaves us with three powerful truths for our journey. First: God’s glory is closer than we think. Even in the ordinary moments, His presence can break through and transform us. Second: Listening to Christ changes everything. The Father’s command— “Listen to Him”—is an invitation to let His Word guide our steps and shape our hearts. Third: The cross is not the end. Every sacrifice, every trial, is a step toward the joy of Easter morning.
As we continue through Lent, let us climb with courage, listen with open hearts, and trust with unwavering faith. The mountaintop moments may be brief, but they are enough to remind us that our destination is not the valley of sorrow, but the eternal joy of God’s presence.
Our reflection is: do we dare to continue to believe, surrender, and open our hearts to God’s presence and love when our life’s journey feels bitter and steep? Why? What should we do with all this in this season of Lent?

Through ShareLife, you bring hope to those who need it most

David is a senior who faced overwhelming loss and uncertainty. His wife passed away, his health declined and he felt forgotten. But in his deepest sorrow, he found hope. When he turned to his pastor, he was guided to Catholic Family Services of Toronto, a Catholic Charities agency that you support through ShareLife, where he was welcomed with open arms. Because of your kindness, David found the support he needed to heal, regain stability and rediscover his sense of purpose.
But unfortunately, there are many more like him—seniors facing isolation, families struggling to put food on the table, refugees trying to rebuild their lives and young parents fighting for a brighter future. Through ShareLife, you help over 40 agencies to bring hope to those who need it most.
The first ShareLife Sunday collection is on March 22. Please give at the parish using a ShareLife envelope, online through our parish website or at sharelife.org/donate.
