Sixth Sunday of Easter

Dear brothers and sisters, the word that most frequently appears in the readings on this sixth Sunday of Easter is “Love.” The word “Love” appears 19 times in today’s second reading and Gospel. Therefore, let us take a moment to reflect on the meaning of “Love” and strive to practice it in our daily lives. I believe each of us has something we love, whether it be a particular item, a specific person, certain foods or drinks, plants, animals, hobbies, or activities. Love always involves an affection for something we enjoy. Typically, we love something because we receive pleasure, benefit and joy from what we love. However, is this the kind of love that God desires for us?

The word LOVE itself can be interpreted as Loyalty – Obedience – Virtue – Empathy. The love we possess should enable us to be loyal to God and our brothers and sisters. The love we possess should also lead us to obedience to the will and commandments of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus said, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love.” The love we possess should empower us to develop virtues, such as kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness and so on. With these virtues, we not only love those who please us but also enable us to love those who have even hurt us. Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you!” (Mt 5:44). The love we possess should lead us to empathy, showing understanding and compassion towards others. In true love, we do not ask what we will receive, but rather what we can give/do for others. Jesus Himself affirmed that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Our role model of love is Jesus Christ Himself. He said, “Love one another as I have loved you.” He willingly sacrificed Himself, suffered, endured and died on the cross to redeem our sins. The question for us is, have we developed a love like the one Jesus Christ has given us? Has our love so far led us to Loyalty, Obedience, the Virtues and Empathy?
