The Baptism of the Lord

The Baptism of the Lord

Today is probably the last day for us to talk about Christmas because starting on Monday we will be back to Ordinary Time. Talking about the Christmas season is not just about celebrating the Birth of Jesus for us, it is also the time to wait in hope and expectation for the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus.
On Christmas Day, we celebrate the Birth of Jesus. The Birth of Jesus is announced to the world on the Feast of the Epiphany when the Wise Men came to adore Jesus and present Him with the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, to symbolize His identity.
The mystery of the Incarnation at Christmas comes to its peak with the Baptism of the Lord. With the Baptism of the Lord, the mystery of salvation moves from the Incarnation to the Mission. Jesus came into the world to save sinners. At His Baptism, Jesus was revealed to the world as the Beloved Son of the Father. In this, we are also reminded of our own baptism, that we too, in Jesus Christ, are the beloved of the Father.
Indeed, love is the soul of mission. Without love, there can be no meaning or purpose or direction in life. Without love, there can be no mission. Jesus came to save us by showing God’s love for us; through baptism, we are united with Jesus in His mission. May we show God’s love to others. That is the meaning, the purpose and the direction of our lives.
Our reflection is: what does the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord mean for our own baptism? What should we do to make our baptism more meaningful and worthy for ourselves and people that we meet in our daily lives?
