Come to the Church on the New Year
Happy New Year! On this first day of the new year, it is certainly good to come to church to pray, after all, it is good way to start a new year. In truth, we need to come to church, we must come to church. We need to come to church to pray and to ask for God’s blessings and protection.
We ask for God’s blessings because we know that we cannot do anything without God’s help. Along with His help, God will also give us His protection and guidance, so that we will not get distracted or discouraged. We come to church on this first day of the new year to pray for all these things.
The first day of the new year is also the eighth day of the Christmas Octave for the Church. On the eighth day of the Christmas Octave, we hear in the Gospel that Mary and Joseph named the child Jesus, the name the angel had given Him before His conception.
The name Jesus is a profound name. It means God saves or God is salvation. The Church also honours Mary under the title of “Mother of God”, this also proclaims that Jesus is God and reminds us of what Jesus said when He was on the Cross , “This is your Mother”.
On this first day of the new year, we turn to Jesus, our God and our Saviour, we present to Him our needs, our intentions and our petitions. Together with the intercession of Mary our Mother, we can be assured, that “Jesus will hear and answer our prayers, and He will protect and guide us.”
This is how we should and need to begin the new year, with the intercession of Mary our Mother, may the Lord bless us and keep us, may He shine His face on us and be gracious to us, and may the Lord grant us peace as we begin the new year.
On this occasion, Fathers Martin and Aegi SCJ and all the staff of St. Thomas More would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year 2026. May this year bring new happiness, new goals, new achievements and a lot of new inspirations in your life. Wishing you a year full of happiness and good heath. God bless all of us.
Fr. Aegidius Warsito, SCJ

Holy Innocents – Feast Day December 28
The ‘Holy Innocents’ are the male children recorded slain by King Herod in Matthew’s Gospel. This unique episode in Jesus’ life, along with the account of the flight into Egypt, presents the ancient tradition of the early Church: Jesus as the ‘new Israel’, persecuted and forced to flee, and the ‘new Moses’, marvelously rescued from the slaughter of the Hebrew children. This feast also points to Jesus as the Messiah and foreshadows the secular opposition Jesus will later meet, culminating in His Passion.
