Humility in Prayer
Dear brothers and sisters, in the experience of prayer, we often come to the Lord with a list of needs that we require. “Lord, I need this and that because I am this and that.” We almost dictate to the Lord, expecting Him to grant our requests according to our plans. It seems as though we leave little room to surrender ourselves to the will and plan of God. When our prayers seem unanswered, we come to the Lord and say, “Please, Lord, I need this and that. Please answer my prayer.” Yet, perhaps the Lord has already answered our prayer and blessed us in a different form, but we may not realize it.
Beloved brothers and sisters, today’s Gospel teaches us the attitude of humility in prayer. It is related that a man with leprosy came to Jesus, begging Him and kneeling, said, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Leprosy was not an ordinary illness. Those suffering from leprosy not only endured physical pain but also psychological distress. Leprosy was considered a contagious and impure disease. This Sunday’s first reading illustrates how those with leprosy were treated—they were isolated, marginalized and shunned by society. Even in such a desperate situation, the man with leprosy did not impose his will on Jesus. He surrendered himself to His will and gave Jesus the freedom to choose. And Jesus also had an extraordinary response, saying, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Jesus truly understood the needs of the person and with His words alone, the man was made clean.
Beloved brothers and sisters, today’s Gospel invites us to reflect: “Do I have humility in my prayers? How am I developing humility in my prayers?”

Ash Wednesday and Mass Schedule
Wednesday, February 14, 2024
Ashes will be distributed for Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14th, at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Please note the time change for the morning Mass.
Catholics worldwide will observe Ash Wednesday on Wed., Feb. 14th. This is a day of fast (less food for those who are between the ages of 14 and 59 years) and abstinence (no meat for adults). This begins the season of Lent, a time of penance when we make more time for prayer, works of piety and charity. Some examples include praying the Stations of the Cross, visiting the sick and elderly, praying the rosary, reading the bible and giving alms to those in need.

Prayer and Life Workshop
Tuesday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m.
Prayer and Life Workshop is a series of sessions that help you to learn and deepen in the art of prayer. This learning has a very practical character, like a workshop: by praying we learn to pray. Sessions include prayer methods such as prayerful reading, prayer of surrender, adoration and contemplative prayer. Participants overcome anxieties through healing and reconciliation, acceptance and surrender. In every session we meditate on readings of the word and listen to a message from Fr. Ignacio Larranaga OFM Cap., our founder. The workshop consists of 15 weekly sessions of 2 hours each, and one final one-day retreat. Instruction is free and the workshop materials have a total cost of $20.00. This current session will be held from Tues., Feb. 20 until Tues., May 28 in the Spanish language. For more information and/or registration contact Betty at bettymagana@hotmail.com or 647-982-3934.
