The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Living by Faith

Brueghel,_Jan_I_-_Christ_in_the_Storm_on_the_Sea_of_GalileeHow appropriate is the Gospel reading of today. With the multitude of storms, winds, droughts, floods and fires in the last few years, we can easily cry out with the disciples: “We are perishing.”
Yet we know the biggest mistake is to let fear take over our lives, even though we, like the disciples, live with many worries and unanswered questions. We know we must live by faith, which is the ability to trust even when despair knocks at our door; to do justice, even at great cost; to profess a firm love in a God we sometimes cannot find, knowing at the same time that God is always with us and never abandons us.
When the disciples experienced the calm after the sea and the wind obeyed Jesus’ words, they were filled with awe even though they who had spent so long with Jesus still wondered: “Who can this be?” Sometimes we too continue to ponder this question in our own lives and seek for answers as we struggle to live our faith.
Our own experience of awe can be a source of encouragement for us to continue to work for justice, to know the joy and wisdom of helping each other through stormy times, knowing peace is not far behind.
