The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A mind like God
Jesus open hand

Today’s Gospel has Jesus expressing some pretty strong words for Peter. When Peter challenges what Jesus is telling the disciples about his death and resurrection, Jesus tells him that he thinks like humans and not like God. “Get behind me, Satan” is so strong, it’s easy to see that it’s not a good thing. One has to wonder – how can we humans ever think like God does?
One clue is to consider losing vs. saving our lives. If we can lose our human way of seeing the world – give up our worldy expectations – maybe we can train ourselves to think differently and be open to what God wants. If we can think more like God, maybe we can embrace the crosses we need to bear more readily or respond more quickly to the needs of others.
We may already be struggling with our daily prayer routine. We may not have time to join a bible study or catch an inspirational video or podcast. Any of these might help save ourselves from our limited and often selfish human ways of thinking. While there are many options for learning more about the mind of Jesus in our connected world, our time is still limited. What part of our lives could we lose in order to save parts that need to be more Christ- like?.

LIFE CHAIN

You are invited to be a part of an important pro-life witness on Sun., Oct. 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the intersection of Ellesmere and Markham Roads. At this location and hundreds of others across North America, we will form a “Life Chain,” bearing signs with messages like “Abortion kills children” and “Adoption, the loving option” and praying silently for the hour. Everyone is welcome to peacefully, publicly and safely call upon our community to protect human life from conception to natural death. Simply show up and follow the directives of the local organizer, including relevant health measures. Let’s advocate for the innocent; as Christ Himself reminds us, “Whatever you do to the least of these, you do to me” (Mt 25:40).

envelop

The annual Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada will be held on 28 and 29 September 2024. This annual initiative assists the bishops in their ministry of accompanying, teaching, guiding, sanctifying and caring for the Church in Canada.
As part of their episcopal ministry, the bishops will continue to work together on important doctrinal and ethical questions; ecumenical initiatives and interreligious dialogue; international relations; evangelization, faith education and catechesis; questions of social justice; responsible ministry, the development of a culture of life and family, as well as on relations with Indigenous peoples.
