God is Great

In today’s Gospel, we hear about Peter and the other disciples at the Sea of Tiberias—doing nothing. Even though it was after the resurrection of Jesus, and He had already appeared to them twice, the disciples were still unsure of what to do or where to go. They had plenty of time on their hands, but no clear direction. So, Peter suggested they go fishing, hoping to make some use of their time.
But strangely, after working hard all night, they caught nothing. Then Jesus called out to them—and everything began to change, and quickly. Suddenly, there was a miraculous catch of fish. Most importantly, Jesus was with them, and life began to look different. Life began to look exciting. But it was also going to be challenging.
Indeed, life has many moments of frustration and disappointment. At times, we feel like we are waiting for nothing or working for nothing. Our natural human tendency is to want life to be easy and smooth. Whether it’s in church, at home, or at work, we desire comfort and ease. Whether in marriage, in raising children, or in caring for elderly parents, we hope for things to go smoothly. And often, we try to have things our way.
Today, if we are not happy in a church organization, we leave. If we are not happy at work, we resign. If we are not happy in marriage, we divorce. But the real question is: do we want to live life our way, or God’s way?
In the first reading, Peter boldly declared that obedience to God must come before obedience to man. He could have chosen to obey those in power, avoided trouble, and saved his life. But that would have meant giving up—for nothing, and to nothing.
The Lord never gives up on us. And we too must not give up on ourselves, on others, or on the challenges and difficulties we face. Instead of telling the Lord how big the problem is, let us turn around and tell the problem how great the Lord is!
Yes, indeed—God is great, all the time. May we use all our time and all our days proclaiming this truth: God is great, all the time!
