Fifth Sunday of Easter

Love one another

Jesus Christ Good Shepherd

Love makes everything beautiful and precious. Even a humble, simple stone can become precious because of a beautiful love story.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a new commandment. It does not begin with “Thou shalt not.” Rather, Jesus says this: “Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another.” What is new about this commandment is that it is based on love—and the source of that love is Jesus Himself.
Following this commandment of Jesus is certainly not easy. We know that to love and to be loving is often difficult, tiring, and draining. Moreover, we are surrounded by the bad and evil things of this world, and we can be affected by them. We want to love and to be loving, but instead, we often become tarnished, disfigured, and contorted by negativity and sin.
But Jesus comes to renew our hearts, to cleanse and heal them from all that is bad and evil. We must humbly confess that our hearts have been tarnished, disfigured, and contorted; we must admit that we have, at times, betrayed and denied the love that God has placed in our hearts.
Yet Jesus is the Divine Healer who will cleanse and purify our hearts of sin and impurities. He is the Divine Craftsman who will polish our hearts—just as a master craftsman polishes a diamond—so that they may shine with His love.
Just as a diamond needs to be cut and polished to sparkle and shine, Jesus uses the Cross to purify our hearts and make them radiant. On the Cross, Jesus revealed how beautiful and precious God’s love is for us.
Therefore, when we accept the crosses that come into our lives, let us remember that Jesus is cleansing and purifying our hearts. When we embrace the crosses of our lives, our hearts will shine brighter than any precious diamond.
And so, the new commandment from Jesus becomes a new love story shining from within us—a story that tells the world of God’s beautiful and precious love.
The question remains: How do we apply this commandment in our daily life? What do we need to do it?
