The Ascension Of The Lord

Ascension of Christ, stained glass window in the Saint Nicholas

This Sunday, the Church celebrates the day of Jesus’ Ascension into heaven. The Solemnity of the Ascension is not about Jesus leaving us behind, but about Him drawing us deeper into His life and mission. After His Resurrection, Jesus spent forty days with His disciples, teaching, encouraging and preparing them. In a moment both awe-inspiring and bittersweet, He was “lifted up” before their eyes.

At first glance, the Ascension might feel like an ending. In truth, it is a beginning. Jesus’ return to the Father is the completion of His earthly mission and the opening of a new chapter for His followers. He promises, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth.” The Ascension is the bridge between the Resurrection and Pentecost, and it shifts the disciples from being mere learners to becoming bold witnesses.

For us today, the message is the same: Jesus’ physical absence is not a loss, but an invitation. He is now present in a new way: through the Spirit, in the sacraments, in the Word and in the community of believers. His Ascension reminds us that our faith is not meant to be static, but it is a mission to carry His love into every corner of the world.

As we await Pentecost, we are called to live in that “upper room” spirit—rooted in prayer, united in hope and ready to be sent. The Ascension is not about looking up to the sky in longing, but about looking around us with purpose.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, as You ascended to the Father, You entrusted us with Your mission. Fill us with the hope of Your promise and the courage of the Spirit, so that we may be Your witnesses in word and deed, until You come again in glory. Amen.

Celebrating Motherhood

Motherhood

The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honour of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral: a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. The angels have not been blessed with such grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God’s earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother.
