God’s Invitation

This Sunday’s readings invite us to rest in the truth that God’s love is both deeply personal and profoundly communal. We hear of a God who rescues His people, not because they have earned it, but because His mercy overflows. In the Gospel, Jesus looks upon the crowds with compassion — not as a distant ruler, but as a shepherd who knows His sheep by name.
He then calls His disciples to share in His mission: to heal, to restore, to proclaim that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. This is not a call reserved for the perfect or the powerful, but for ordinary people willing to be vessels of extraordinary grace. The work is not ours alone — it is God’s work through us.
In our daily lives, the “crowds” we are called to serve may not be literal multitudes, but they are all around us: the colleague who feels unseen, the neighbour who is struggling silently, the friend who carries hidden burdens, or the lonely, the weary, the overlooked. To follow Jesus’ example is to notice them, to approach them with gentleness, and to offer what we can: a listening ear, a word of encouragement, a helping hand. It means trusting that even when we feel inadequate, God equips us for the mission He entrusts to us.
This week, perhaps we can carry this question into prayer: Where is God inviting me to be His hands, His voice and His heart today? And as we reflect, we can trust that the same God who called fishermen and tax collectors two thousand years ago is still calling us — not because we are ready, but because His love is ready to work through us.
