The Ascension of the Lord

Ascension of the Lord

This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, which should have been celebrated last Thursday but for pastoral reasons it was moved to this Sunday. As we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, this question may come across our minds: Why did Jesus leave His Church in the hands of weak and unworthy people who fail and will fall?
Certainly, it would be good if Jesus had remained on earth to lead the Church, then there would be no problems, and the whole world would be drawn to the Church and be saved. With Jesus on earth, our task as Christians would be so easy as we just have to direct those who need help to Jesus, and the problems of the world would be solved. But such is not the case and so we have to walk by faith along the journey of life.
On this Feast of the Ascension, we celebrate the faith that keeps us going and moving. Though we have not seen Jesus, we believe in Him. Through this belief, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to be witnesses of God’s saving love and to help others come to believe in Jesus. For those who have not seen Jesus and do not yet believe in Him, we have the mission of being His presence to them and leading them to respond to His love. The Holy Spirit will guide us, just as He has guided the Church over the past 2,000 years.
Therefore, let us ask for forgiveness for the times we have failed and fallen as Christians Let us rise with the Holy Spirit and be witnesses to repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Let us bear witness to the saving love of God, so that others may come to know Jesus and receive the forgiveness of their sins.
Fr. Aegidius Warsito, SCJ
